This recipe for Healthy Air Fryer Plantain Banana Chips is dee-licious and makes a low calorie, low fat, crispy vegan snack to enjoy guilt-free!
I have a thing for traditional Indian ‘nasta’…. snacks like sev, papdi, gathiya, singh bhajia, banana chips, and chana chor.Β Mmmmm, it’s making my mouth water just typing the words out!Β I love the burst of spice with each handful that I pop into my mouth.Β But, the problem is that, typically, most Indian nasta are deep-fried, including one of my favorites, plantain banana chips.
As with most of my recipes, I thought about how I could make healthy nasta.Β Enter plantains and my trusty air fryer.
About My Trusty Air Fryer
I own a Cuisinart Air Fryer Toaster Oven and I absolutely love it!Β I love that the fact that it’s a 2-in-1 appliance that takes up less counter space.Β Not only does it toast bagels and english muffins to perfection, but we also use the air fryer feature to make fresh-cut fries, air fryer falafels and now, healthy air fryer plantain banana chips!Β Score!
Plantains
Just to clarify, technically, plantains are not bananas, although they do come from the banana family.Β Plantains are typically bright green with a thick skin, larger in size and lower in sugar than a banana.Β They are not typically eaten raw because they are a bit starchier.Β You can find them in the produce section near the pineapples and coconuts.
How To Make Healthy Air Fryer Plantain Banana Chips
The key to making the perfect plantain chips is the slice them evenly and thinly.Β A mandolin slicer is just perfect for the job.Β First, you cut off the ends of the plantain.Β Then, take your knife and make a cut lengthwise through the skin of the plantain and carefully peel it.Β Use your mandolin slicer to make either long slices or diagonal slices, as thin as possible.Β You lay them in the basket of the air fryer and spray them with avocado oil.Β Air fry them at 375F for about 5 minutes, turn them over, and let them air fry for another 2-3 minutes.

Tips To Make The Perfect Healthy Plantain Banana Chips
The number one key to making the perfect plantain banana chips in the air fryer is to slice them as thin as possible and as even as possible.Β But, we’re all human and thin and even may not happen. Fear not! Just keep an eye on the plantain chips as they’re cooking to make sure they don’t burn.Β The time I have noted in the recipe is a general guideline.
